traces of time
When you first arrive at the house, it’s almost impossible not to think about those who came before you and the stories this place quietly holds.

There is a sense of connection here, a feeling that ancestry is not only about blood, but also about place, care, and continuity. The hidden house carries its own personality, shaped by time and by the many lives that have passed through it.

The age of the house is not recorded on paper, but it is clearly written in its structure. Built entirely of stone, it follows a traditional rural typology common in central Portugal before industrial construction methods became widespread.
The presence of 'lojas' on the lower level suggests a time when animals were kept beneath the living spaces, helping to warm the house during colder months.
In the kitchen, traces of the original fireplace are still visible, recalling a period when the hearth was the heart of the home, used for cooking, warmth, and daily life. The stone ruins and auxiliary structures preserve niches built into the walls, once used to store food and tools, long before modern storage solutions existed.

Irregular wooden elements that supports the roof point to hand-worked timber rather than standardized construction. Together, these details suggest a house shaped slowly and organically, likely dating back to the 19th century or earlier.

The house once belonged to João Baião and his family, later to Camila, and before them to the aunt of our neighbour, Encarnação. Her cousin once shared, with great pride, that she was born right here, in the hidden house.

After them..
Two British couples helped bring the house back to life.
A Brazilian couple gave it back its soul.
Now, it waits quietly for its next chapter.

You might be it.
why this page exists
When we first moved into the hidden house, we knew almost nothing about its past.
And that felt surprisingly sad.

This page exists to gather what can be known, what can be sensed, and what has been shared by neighbours and memory. It is not a complete history, but a living one.
As new stories emerge, this space will grow, adding new layers to a house that has always been shaped by time, care, and continuity.
